General Notes:
1860 Carter Co census lists John S age 2 with his parents and brothers Thompson 5 & William 3 at Olive Hill KY. Greenup Co 1870 lists Sam 11, wth his mother Frances McCormack 31, Seamstress, his two brothers and younger sisters Sarah E. 8, Annie 3 & Suvenia 6 mo at Belle Fonte Furnance KY. Sarah E. grew up to marry a Dr. Miller of Greenup. The two younger children perished in a tragic fire soon after. Frances died two years later. It was said she died of a broken heart. A song was published about the tragic fire. The Ratcliffes (Frances' family) stopped the publication of the song. Some years ago(1960's) my Aunt Emma Morgan of Olive Hill KY heard the song over her local radio station sung by the Stanley Brothers. Orphaned at an early age. 1880 census listed him with the Matthew Warnick family at Old Town KY as a laborer. Sam was very good with figures (math) despite his lack of education. He worked as a guide at Carter Caves as a teenager.
He referred to his Kentucky Bourbon concotion as "Gum-Go-Ackum."
