Eva Inches: House No 380 (next door) is Caleb Burton & Elizabeth (Burchett). She is the sister fo Nelson Thomas Burchett.

Jim Flaherty: My records, which were compiled by my late sister, indicate as you state, that Clarinda was born in Lawrence not Carter County. I have a copy of Mormon Library Film # F-732 Carter County Statistics which lists the marriage of Clarinda and Nelson Burchett, Clarinda, age 19, place of birth Lawrence County, KY. Nelson was age 25, also born Lawrence County, KY.

From: Captwo3 To: REMCCORM Hi Robert, Sorry for the slow response, had to locate a particular file I was looking for. I believe the blindness you mention was not that of Nelson but actually was Clarinda McCormick. In a family history written in 1963 by my grandmother, Virgie Prichard McCaskey she states: "Grandmother Burchett (Clarinda) lost her sight as the result of a smallpox vaccination and was blind for 22 years before her death."

She goes on to say: "Grandfather Burchett (Nelson T.) was a surveyor and a county school teacher as well as a Southern Methodist minister circut rider. So he was away from home much of the time and left the farming to the rest of the family. The girls did farm work as soon as they were big enough to pull weeds."

I also have an article from the Ashland (KY) Daily Independent dated May 22, 1960 which goes into great detail about a manuscript Nelson wrote regarding Phillip Strother "who worked for long years to get the Methodist Church firmly established throughout these eastern states." The manuscript was found in the Burchett log cabin which still stands today in Carter Caves State Park. I will try to get a copy of the article off to you in the next few days.

Note from Janet Lavelle: My father, Estill spent a great deal of time with his Grandma, Clarinda. She was blind in her later years, but could knit socks rapidly for everyone in the family. He often told me how amazing it was that she could hear "Gordie" (her brother Gordon) coming to visit while he was some distance away from the house. Clarinda lived with her son, Albert and his wife Flora after Nels (this is what she called her husband) had died until her death in 1915.

About the only thing dad mentioned was that Floyd was a minister and that he and Clarinda's paternal grandfather was named Dennis. He said Clarinda told him this when he was a boy. I'll keep looking through the papers I have from years ago and if I find anything I'll gladly send it along. Janet
